Wow, a month! That sounds amazing. And I didn't even know there was a dengue fever vaccine!

The dengue vaccine is made by a Japanese company and is called Qdenga. Approved in Europe and used widely in South America, particularly Argentina and Brazil last year. So far, the results are good. But it's a live vaccine, and since a second dengue infection can be worse than the first, it's not recommended to take only one shot when you've never been infected before. It's complex and I would rely on a physician's advice on this.

Yeah, Brent had it once in Thailand and now there are reports of it here in Mexico, so….

Yes, there was a lot of dengue in Mexico, South America, and Central America last year. Mostly in the summer and early fall. Mexico has not approved the vaccine yet...

Glad to hear it was the summer as we got bit quite a bit last night!

Dengue only comes from the day mosquitos, the aedes aegypti and aedes albopictus; the standard dusk/evening mosquitos rarely carry diseases other than malaria. But malaria is not an issue in most areas of Mexico as far as I know. Still, best to wear protective clothing and repellents.

I'm impressed how much you pack into those 2 bags!

You say you don't check any bags (most of the time), however sometimes airlines limit the size but most importantly the weight of carry-on bags (anywhere from 7 to 12kg).... did you ever had any issues on this side?

I'd love to reduce what I carry around (currently carrying a 60L and a 24L).

My bigger pack weighs < 10kg and so far I never had an issue. I do pay for carry-on size if necessary and don't try to sneak it in as a personal item. (That did get me into trouble once.) Soon, I might take a flight that limits the weight to 8kg, so then I might get creative by putting things in my jacket and tying that around my waist.

The trick is really to leave behind what you don't need even if you need to re-purchase it a year later. There are donation centers (to get rid of things) and second-hand stores (to buy things) everywhere.

So glad I voted for this. Wow. Wow. Wow. This was INCREDIBLY informative. I loved your list breakdown. I got an "ick" moment when you mentioned tick tweezers?! Can you share the link--or show a pic--of your 44L Osprey backpack? I'm curious to see what that looks like.

I'll ask Daniel to make a pic on the ferry. We're about to take off!

You have a great travel planning process! Just FYI, my US passport has an automatic RFID. It has a small symbol on the front cover. Many other countries have this protection.

Thanks! I do have a small symbol on my passport but Google reverse image search tells me it means there's a biometric chip inside. Do you perhaps have a link to information on the "self-protectiveness" of passports?

I think it is still a wise move to protect this biometric info with a protective sleeve of some sort. This is some info I found.https://www.us-passport-service-guide.com/rfid-radio-frequency-identification-chip.html.

I will check and get back with you. If I have misremembered, I will also let you know.
